HELP FOR KIDS
Therapy for children involves meeting with the psychologist in person to address and work through
behavioural, emotional and mental health issues. This type of counselling is specifically designed to
meet the unique needs of children and allows for effective communication and intervention.
While online sessions are frequently requested, this medium is not ideal for young children.
During counselling sessions, the psychologist creates a safe and non-judgmental space where the
child can express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. The psychologist may utilise various
therapeutic techniques such as play therapy, art therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, or talk
therapy, depending on the child’s age, individual needs and specific concerns.
Some common reasons children may benefit from counselling include:
- Trauma or abuse: Counselling can help children process and heal from traumatic experiences,
whether they have directly experienced them or have witnessed them. - Anxiety and stress: Children may struggle with excessive worry, social anxiety, or performance
anxiety. Counselling can help them develop coping strategies and build resilience. - Behavioural issues: If a child is displaying challenging or disruptive behaviours, counselling
sessions can provide a safe space to explore the underlying causes and develop healthier ways
to manage their emotions. - Grief and loss: Counselling can support children who are experiencing grief and loss due to the
death of a loved one, divorce, or other significant life changes. - Relationship difficulties: If a child is struggling with friendships, family dynamics, or other
relationship issues, counselling can help them develop healthier communication skills and
improve their relationships. - Academic challenges: Counselling can assist children who are experiencing difficulties with
concentration, motivation, or school performance by identifying and addressing underlying
emotional or behavioural factors.
Face-to Face Counselling for children allows for a personal connection between the psychologist and
child, promoting trust and comfort. It can be especially beneficial for younger children who may
struggle with articulating their thoughts and feelings verbally.
It is important to note that the effectiveness of counselling for children relies on the connection
between the psychologist and the child, as well as the child’s willingness and ability to engage in the
therapeutic process.
The initial consultation is always with the parent, where a thorough background will be explored
and a way forward can be agreed upon. It is preferable that the child is not present during this
consultation, to allow for an open and honest discussion.
